Life Sciences

Life Sciences has become a vitally important sector in Nova Scotia, with even greater promise for the future.

More than 35 companies are engaged in marketing, product development and research. Their efforts are supported by collaborations with local universities, teaching hospitals, government labs and a medical school. Many are seeking new partnerships with other life sciences companies, universities, government research organizations and hospitals around the world.

Nova Scotia life science firms have almost 500 products now competing in the global marketplace, and more than 300 new products in the pipeline. Most products are exported. Companies hold more than 200 patents registered in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and several other countries.

There are over 1100 people working in the industry, and twice that number in public research centres. Annual revenues are approaching $200 Million.

Expertise is concentrated in the fields of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention, functional foods / nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, medical technology and marine biotechnology. In the medical field, Nova Scotia is a world leader in multi-organ transplants, cardiology research and cancer research. Nova Scotia is being recognized as a centre for excellence in life sciences.
